How to Save Your Roof from Bad Weather

June 8, 2018

Your roof is your first line of defense from all the harsh weather outside. The roof should be the first one to be checked after a severe storm. How does bad weather affect your roof and what can we do to protect it? Read on and find out more.

First things first, how does bad weather affect your roof?

  • Strong winds can largely impact your roofing shingles.
  • Heavy rain can do a lot of things to your roof. It can cause the growth of molds, pest infestations, and roof leaks.
  • Your roof’s regular exposure to extreme heat can cause it to gradually deteriorate.
  • Snow and ice can be too much of a load on your roof.
  • Severe thunderstorms can sometimes come with hailstorms. Hails, as we all know, damage everything.

So, what can we do to prevent or minimize the effects of bad weather on our roof?

  • Regularly clean the gutters. We don’t want clogged gutters. When the gutters get clogged, the roof tends to get rust and leaks.
  • Remove dangerous tree limbs and branches from your roof. There should be at least a 10-feet distance between your house and the trees around.
  • Right after a severe storm, make sure to inspect for any damage inside and outside the property. As for the roof, look for any sign of leaks.
  • Never let roof leaks stay long. If you have spotted leaks in the roof, make sure to resolve these as soon as possible. Water penetration can be the root to many problems so we have to act fast.
  • Install roof insulation. Ice dams can form when there is no insulation in the roofing system. Roof insulation can prevent heat through the roof.

Looking out for your roof can be quite a challenge. While we have the option to call in professional roofers to do everything, it always pays if we equip ourselves with the knowledge of what we can do.
